German audio company Beyerdynamic, known for its long-standing legacy in professional headphones and microphones, is set to be acquired by Chinese manufacturer Cosonic. Beyerdynamic confirmed the news in a statement to German tech publication Heise Online.
Despite the ownership change, Beyerdynamic has assured that its headphones will continue to be manufactured in Germany—a key point of interest for longtime fans of the brand who value its “Made in Germany” heritage.
Founded in 1924 in Berlin by Eugen Beyer, the company originally specialized in loudspeakers for cinemas. Over the decades, it evolved into a respected name in professional audio, with its microphones used by icons such as Queen Elizabeth II and The Beatles. Beyerdynamic also pioneered innovation with products like the DT 880—recognized for combining dynamic headphone technology with electrostatic-like characteristics.
The reported deal values the acquisition at €122 million, though Beyerdynamic CEO Andreas Rapp noted that the final figure could still change. A significant portion of the proceeds will reportedly go toward repaying company debts.
Cosonic, while not widely known in the consumer audio space, has long operated as an OEM/ODM partner for various audio brands. The acquisition is expected to help Cosonic expand its global reach, leveraging Beyerdynamic’s well-established international distribution network.
According to Rapp, the move allows Beyerdynamic to secure future investment and continue innovating under a new ownership structure. “The shareholders have recognised that future investments cannot be financed with the current structure,” he said. “They have therefore decided to sell the company to an interested party who will not only continue Beyerdynamic’s 100-year history, but also help carry it forward.”
Rapp emphasized that all employment contracts will remain intact and that Beyerdynamic will continue to operate independently. The acquisition is expected to be finalized within three to five months.
While we haven’t reviewed many of Beyerdynamic’s recent offerings, we did spend time with models like the Custom One Pro, DT 880, and DT 1350 back in the day. It’s been a while since we’ve had a unit on hand, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on how this acquisition unfolds—and hopefully get the chance to revisit the brand’s latest gear soon.
